An oldie and a goodie. By now, most German students have seen this movie, as it was released in 1999, and if you've been to Berlin, you have a pretty good idea of what the look of this movie is. It's spectacular.

With the handsome Til Schweiger and the enchanting Johanna Wokalek, this is a great date movie and unfortunately really hard to track down in the US. Currently I can only find it on a Region 2 DVD from Amazon, however I did request it at Netflix, so maybe they will acquire it at some point.
Back to the story: Til Schweiger is a bachelor and a bit of a Frauenheld (womanizer) and ends up in a mental institution to do public service. Johanna Wokalek is a patient there and awkwardness, depth of emotion, tension, and hilarity ensue. The subtitle is "Wie weit gehst du, wenn du verliebt bist?" How far will you go when you're in love?

"Downfall," in English. Hitler and the End of the Third Reich – The title is pretty self-explanatory, and this is a fantastic film. Not for the faint-of-heart. Rated R.

Das Leben der Anderen (The Lives of Others) is a breathtaking film by the Director Florian Henckel von Donnersmark about the life of one Stasi whose job it was to observe the life of an actress and her partner in the DDR. The set is perfectly made for the time it was set in, the acting is amazing, the story-telling goes to the bone. Rated R.
